The promise of health promoting foods to improve nutrition and to reduce the onset of vascular disease, obesity, diabetes, and other major chronic illnesses linked to poor diet quality has consumers flocking to their local supermarkets in search of products that will help them to lead longer, healthier lives. At the same time, rising healthcare costs are leading governments to institute preventive health initiatives involving food.
The IFSH Center for Nutrition Research connects industry with ways to determine the health promoting properties of food components, align nutrition objectives with food safety requirements, and evaluate the impact of food processing and packaging technologies on nutritional values to ensure delivery of the highest quality products to consumers. The Center supports the work of the Clinical Nutrition Research Center (CNRC), which conducts human nutrition and clinical research to determine the health benefits of foods and food components in a variety of study areas, and assists industry with assessing and determining science-based health claims, which must be developed, commercialized and regulated in a safe and effective manner.
